INFECTIOUS DISEASE OF THE TISSUES
Periodontitis
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the tissues that surround and support the teeth.
The inflammation extends deep into the tissues. It causes a gradual detachment from the gums and damages the bone that supports the roots.

The patient should treat periodontitis immediately. Otherwise, the teeth will slowly loosen and eventually drop. Periodontitis is considered the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. In fact, the disease is common in ages over 45. The patient usually notices it at a very late stage. However, a periodontist or dentist can diagnose periodontitis early.
Periodontitis, depending on the loss, is distinguished in early, medium or advanced and depending on its extent, is characterized as localized or generalized.
The symptoms that usually accompany Periodontitis
- When gums bleed when brushed or on their own
- Gums are red, swollen or sensitive
- When the gums have subsided
- Tooth mobility
- When the gums have been detached from the tooth
- Teeth movement
- Persistent odor
- Pus between tooth and gums
Agents that predispose to periodontitis
- Insufficient removal of dental plaque from the teeth
- Smoking
- Uncontrollable diabetes
- Heredity
- Stress and anxiety
- Systemic Diseases
- Diseases that affect the immune system (eg aids)
- Hormonal disorders
- Malocclusion
- Poor oral hygiene
- Drug intake

Conservative therapy
With special periodontal tools and ultrasound systems, the dentist removes stone, microbes and toxins from the root, using local anaesthesia.
Therefore, the patient does not feel pain during the procedure or after going home. However, sadly this treatment has limited abilities to fully resolve the periodontal problem. The destruction of the bones continues but at a slower pace.
Usually, 4 to 6 visits are required. In addition, the dentist gives oral hygiene instructions to the patient (correct brushing, interdental brushes and sometimes oral solution and/or gel).
The ideal time to evaluate the effects of conservative periodontal treatment is 3 months.
Surgical treatment
Despite the conservative therapy, if periodontal disease has progressed too far, it is necessary to follow a surgical arrangement in specific sections of the mouth.
First, the dentist cuts the gums locally with microsurgical methods. Secondly, the tissues are settled, and, finally, the dentist stitches them together.
The surgery has a few advantages. Firstly, the lost periodontal tissues will regenerate. Moreover, sometimes, the periodontal pockets might reduce. Finally, the root surface of the tooth will be more accessible by deposition of tartar.
The patient will feel some pain after surgery.
However, the disadvantage is that, after surgery, the teeth will be sensitive to cold and warm temperatures, until the patient is fully recovered.
Conservative laser treatment
The additional use of laser in conservative treatment greatly reduces the likelihood of requiring periodontal surgery.
Therefore, when combined with conservative treatment, periodontal laser therapy is effective. It allows the patient to stay healthy and live comfortably, as the disease is under control.
Periodontal laser therapy is a safe and painless treatment. At the same time, there are no sensitivities in the teeth and it is particularly effective for patients with health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, patients with allergy to antibiotics, haemophilia, HIV.
The laser transfers energy to the periodontal pouch to remove the infected gum tissue and disinfect the micro-environment of the pocket. This kills the bacteria and inactivates the toxins on the surface of the tooth root and the gum tissue. Thus the healing process can start.
With the use of laser applications dental services incorporate the most recent technological developments in various fields in Dental Medicine.
